Once the German troops closed in to the center where they had completely surrounded the German troops, Samsanov the general of the Russians decided that it was over and they surrendered, making it a win for Germany in the Battle of Tannenburg As time passed the Germans closed in on the Russians surrounding them in a circle and killed all troops as they closed in towards the center. The Russians then got into a tight spot when the German’s surrounded their troops. The progress of the battle was as follows. The history of imperial Russia’s unfortunate participation in World War I is epitomized in the ignominious outcome of the Battle of Tannenberg. Whether Gumbinnen was a victory, a defeat, or a stalemate. The Russians had a big lack of munitions so they were limited to only using a certain amount of munitions in the battlefield. The outcome of this military masterpiece, called the Battle of Tannenberg, was the destruction or capture of almost the whole of Samsonov’s army. First Army at Gumbinnen, and their casualties proved higher than expected. Eventually the Germans overcame the Russian assaults and started slowly progress in the battle. When they were in battle the Germans of course they improved with tactics but the constant assaults from the Russian troops kept pushing them back. The defeat led the German High Command to dismiss von Prittwitz and his chief of staff, replacing them with General (later Field Marshal) Paul von Hindenburg and General Erich Ludendorff. This battle seems to be somewhat balanced and is really in favor of no one because they each had their faults in tactics. Rennenkampf and the Russian First Army were the first to encounter the German Eighth Army, winning the Battle of Gumbinnen. The Germans were more heavily fortified with weapons and training. Russia had about 206,000 soldiers and there was about 160,000 German soldiers, there army was so big that their ratio to the German army was 29 to 16. Although their army was much larger and had more troops than Germany, they were short on supplies like Artillery, Clothes, Rifles, and Rations etc. Also, Russia was not prepared because they had mobilized too early. Germany was at a disadvantage here because they didn't realize Russia would mobilize there troops so quickly after attacking France and they were also being attacked from two fronts. Russian General Samsonov led his Second Army from the southwest, while General Rennenkampf marched the First Army through the northeast. On the eastern front, Germany was in a precarious position because the majority of their troops were sent off to the western front and committed to the offensive there as outlined by the Schlieffen plan. Battle of Tannenberg On August 26, 1914, one of the first battles of World War I started when Russian troops attempted to invade German territory in a multi-pronged ambush.
